Economic uncertainty has sat at the top of architecture firms’ five-year concern list for two consecutive years.Β Β
According to theΒ 2026 Architecture Industry Benchmark Report,Β 57% of respondentsΒ cited itΒ as the biggest challenge theyΒ anticipateΒ overΒ the next five years.Β
What hasΒ changedΒ year-on-yearΒ is what sits alongside it.Β
TheΒ numberΒ ofΒ architectureΒ firmsΒ concerned withΒ keeping up with emerging technologyΒ over the next five yearsΒ has tripled since 2025, rising from 4% to 13%. That shift reflects how quickly AI has moved from a topic of discussion to an operational reality, and whetherΒ smallerΒ firms are positioned to keep pace.Β
AI is No Longer a Future Concern, Itβs a Present One
In 2026, 85% of architecture firms identify automation and AI in design as the most impactful trend shaping the industry going forward. Firms are no longer asking whether AI will affect architecture, theyβre wondering if theyβre moving fast enough to remain relevant and competitive in an industry where early adopters are beginning to pull ahead.
Sustainability has also grown significantly as a key issue in architecture, cited by 45% of firms as an impactful trend, up from 33% in 2025. As regulation, client expectations, and environmental responsibility converge, sustainable design is becoming a baseline requirement rather than a differentiator.

The View From the Ground is Consistent
When firms described the biggest challenges of the past 12 months, three themes surfaced consistently: pipeline management, economic conditions, and staffing and resourcing. The forward visibility that once allowed confident resourcing decisions has narrowed for many practices, and the knock-on effect on client behaviour has been direct and immediate.
Technology sits as a quieter fourth theme, although itβs growing louder. Firms navigating software changes, new AI tools, and the question of how to adopt without destabilising what already works are facing a challenge that isnβt easily overcome.
The practices that will navigate the next five years most successfully are those building the operational foundations now: clear financial visibility, connected workflows, and the right tools to make fast, informed decisions when the market shifts beneath them.
